What to do before waxing to make your experience less painful

Let your hair grow as long as possible

An esthetician can always trim your hair if needs be, but they can’t make it grow any faster! Besides, shaving makes ingrown hairs more likely as it cuts each hair at the follicle, instead of removing it from underneath the skin. You should always leave your hair as is and try and time your appointments as accurately as possible.

Exfoliate a week prior to getting waxed

Gently exfoliating around the area, starting a week before your waxing appointment can positively affect the pain and the result. Exfoliating will remove any dead skin cells and help to prevent any ingrown hairs. In addition, having no dead skin eliminates the possibility that the wax will grab the skin accidentally, as opposed to the hair. Making sure that the wax grabs the hair, will make the appointment much less painful too. Avoid scrubbing too harshly as it will make the skin sensitive and avoid exfoliating at all on the day of your appointment.

If you don’t have an exfoliant, don’t panic! You can make your own exfoliant by mixing sugar and light oil (such as coconut oil) on your skin to remove any dead skin cells.

Avoid stimulants such as coffee and alcohol

It might be tempting to do a quick shot to ease the pain of waxing, but it’s not the best option. In fact, it does the opposite of easing the pain! Both coffee and alcohol are stimulants and they will make your skin even more sensitive. The same theory applies to your period, unfortunately, ladies, you’ll be better off waiting until it’s over before your appointment. When you’re on your period your pain threshold isn’t great.

Wear comfy clothing

Your skin will need to breathe after getting waxed, so make sure you pull out the period pants and large joggers. For ultimate comfort, you should also only wear cotton. After the wax, your skin will be very sensitive, so avoid tight jeans at all costs! If it’s summer, wear a skirt!

Apply numbing cream for waxing

Numbing cream for waxing is perfect for desensitizing your skin and provides highly effective pain relief when applied before your treatment. Using our popular numbing cream for waxing, getting your bikini line waxed doesn’t need to be a procedure that you dread due to the agonising pain. It’s completely safe to use on all parts of the body, even in sensitive areas.

You can also use numbing cream for waxing for:

Shower before your appointment

You want to feel as fresh as possible before your waxing appointment, so pop in the shower before you go. After your wax, your therapist will recommend that you don’t shower for 24 hours. This is due to the fact that your hairs follicles are exposed and you’re more prone to infection and irritation.
