What are the possible causes of an itchy tattoo?

Normal healing process

The chances are that you’re just going through the normal healing process. Your skin will still be healing and recovering from the wound, so your skin will be inflamed, repairing itself and preventing infection from occurring. As the skin is healing, it’s a normal part of the process for your skin to itch a little.

Your skin may be infected

Although it’s more than likely just a normal part of the process, your skin could also be infected. This usually occurs during the first couple of weeks after getting a tattoo, as your new ink is vulnerable to being exposed to nasties that could cause infection.

If this does happen, the itching is normally accompanied by swelling, redness and discharge. Severe infections can even cause fever and chills. If you do think that your tattoo is infected, it’s best to go and take a visit to your doctor.

You could be allergic to the ink!

Some people are actually allergic to the ink - in rare cases. Contrary to popular belief, this can actually occur straight away, or it can happen several years after getting your tattoo. As a result of this, you may have severe itching along with redness and hive-like bumps.

Preexisting skin conditions

If you have any conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, it might not be the best idea to get a tattoo. Problems such as flare ups can even happen years after you’ve had the tattoo

MRI Scans

There are reports that show that your tattoo and skin around the tattoo can become itchy after an MRI scan. Symptoms of this can include itching along with swelling. If this is the case, it should clear up in a week or so.
